BBC Shoutcast info

In mid-2023, the BBC will discontinue their use of the Shoutcast streaming technology as they implement HLS and DASH technologies for their streaming services. The exact date for the switch over is not yet known. Further information about this change can be found on the BBC Sounds site “Why am I hearing a message advising the stream I am listening to will stop working mid-2023?“.

Most radio manufacturers will have models which cannot support the BBCs new streaming formats; it will no longer be possible to receive BBC Internet Radio and Podcasts directly to these devices. The affected Sharp models are:

  • DR-I470(BK)
  • DR-I470(BK) PRO
  • DR-I470(BR) PRO
  • DR-I470(GR)
  • DR-I470(GR) PRO

For listeners in the UK:

Most BBC Radio services remain accessible on these models via DAB/DAB+ and FM. Additionally, the models listed above have Bluetooth allowing you to stream via the BBC Sounds App from your mobile device. If your device does not support Bluetooth, you can connect via an AUX 3.5mm cable instead.

For listeners not in the UK:

The models listed above have Bluetooth allowing you to stream via the BBC Sounds App from your mobile device. If your device does not support Bluetooth, you can connect via an AUX 3.5mm cable instead.
